‘Simulated Depths’

Simulated Depths is a compelling visual exploration by Joanne Palmer that challenges our perception of reality through the unique lens of an endoscopy camera. Typically used for medical examinations, this unconventional tool unveils a world of simulated depths, transforming familiar scenes into abstract, almost alien landscapes. Palmer's work delves into the deceptive nature of images, provoking the notion that what we see is not always a genuine representation. By repurposing a clinical instrument for artistic exploration, she questions the authenticity of visual narratives, prompting viewers to reconsider the illusions embedded in our visual understanding of the world.

The series blurs the lines between reality and illusion, inviting viewers to navigate a visual terrain that is simultaneously familiar and disorienting. Each image in Simulated Depths is a testament to Palmer's skill in using the mechanical eye to reveal hidden layers of existence, symbolizing the delicate thread of human perception. The work encourages a deeper reflection on how technology can manipulate and redefine our sense of reality. Palmer’s innovative approach not only challenges traditional photographic techniques but also invites a broader discussion on the nature of truth and deception in the visual arts, making Simulated Depths a thought-provoking and visually striking collection.

Stimulated Depths was a final display in London that immersed viewers in a unique exploration of embodiment through an innovative blend of sensory elements. The installation featured a series of suspended materials—textiles, wires, and translucent fabrics—arranged to create an enveloping, almost organic environment. These hanging materials were strategically placed to evoke a sense of physical immersion, blurring the line between viewer and space. At the center of the installation, a chair was positioned, inviting the audience to sit and engage more deeply with the experience. Once seated, viewers donned a VR headset that projected a video, further enhancing the sense of embodiment by transporting them into a virtual world. The combination of the physical, tactile environment and the immersive digital experience created a layered interaction.
